History

A short description of the history of the built -on Blaak-viaduct (since 1977) and the Old Harbour-area. The Blaak-viaduct connects the Old Harbour-area with the inner city and allows pedestrians to cross safely.

History Old Harbour

The Old Harbour-area used to be the place of birth of the City of Rotterdam. A small fishermen's village at the time (13th century). The Old Harbour itself in fact, used to be the mouth of the river Rotte and therewith Rotterdam's first natural harbour.

History Blaak-viaduct

This built-on pedestrian viaduct used to be a wish of the municipal city planners (around 1977). So this was not the architect's idea. The architect was asked to "furnish" the viaduct.
